An open letter to Advocate HS Phoolka by Dal Khalsa [Kuldip Nayar's autobiography issue]

Dear Brother H S Phoolka,

Sat Sri Akal ji.

I read your statement in newspapers in which you had asked your Sikh brethren to stop portraying Kuldip Nayar as enemy of the Sikhs, keeping in view his past services towards the Sikhs, especially during 1984 tragic events. We believe in your words that Nayar took strong note of army attack and Nov killings and voiced his concern in favour of the community.

After singing praises in his favour, in a very casual manner you had admitted that Nayar’s autobiography contains derogatory contents against Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale and Bhai Amrik Singh. Your suggestion is that since an apology has come from Nayar, the Sikhs must end their campaign against him.

As you had come out in open, defending Nayar without realizing the pain and anger of the community and the damage Nayar’s writings has done to the Sikh cause, it forced me to write to you.

It is astonishing to note your silence on his recent derogatory article criticizing June 1984 martyrs memorial and the Sikh institutions. Nayar has crossed all limits by recommending the scrapping of the SGPC. Whatever good he has done to Sikhs by raising his voice against the injustices done to them, doesn’t provide Nayar with an license to offend the Sikhs and mock at their value systems and traditions.

Nayar is known to put the Sikh community in the dock and then mock at them. Kuldip Nayar’s chapter on Punjab problem is full of vilified propaganda against Sikh personalities.

As far as his apology is concerned it hasn’t come direct from horse’s mouth. The manner is which it has been tendered is not proper.

His argument that ‘he will remove objectionable contents in the next edition’ is a vague commitment. Who knows when and under what circumstances the next edition will come out. Moreover, it is the prerogative of the publisher to print the next edition and not the author. Publisher will only print the next edition if there will be a demand and not otherwise.

May I ask why the author has not volunteered to clear all false accusations from the remaining stock of the current edition lying with the publisher.

My humble request is you must advice your fellow friend Nayar to write his apology himself on his letter pad, under his own signature, without ifs and buts and send it to the Akal Takht, which is central place for all Sikhs. Apology must be addressed to the Sikh Nation. Kindly don’t misread that we are asking him to appear at the Akal Takht in person. There is no such demand. Absolutely no.

If your friend has genuinely realized that he has rubbed the Sikhs in the wrong way, then let him show magnanimity and face the community. He should neither hide himself behind persons like you, who command respect in Sikhs nor you people should give him shelter.

For how long, Sikhs would get trapped in gimmicks of Indian authors and writers who use every occasion to criticize “hardliners” and praise “liberal” Sikhs. Don’t you see a design behind it?

One thing is for sure, Nayar needs community’s reprimand. After all, for how long, Sikhs would tolerate insult to their martyrs? Enough is enough. The irony of the situation is that the reputed Sikhs like you have come in the defence of the person, who has offended the Sikhs, who is culprit if not the enemy. Your defence in Nayar’s favour is certainly not in good taste.

The world is planning to go to Mars and Sikhs are still struggling with 1980 fight.
When will we have visionaries amongst us to secure future for our children?

HS Phoolka is naive for ignoring the true face of Kuldip Nayar which he himself fully exposed in his recent article which oozes of hatered and bold faced lies about Sikhs.
What has Nanavati commission done for us?? Has a single leader of Congress been brought to justice? The only thing these various commissions and the trials in which Phoolka is involved for the past 26 years is that it has given cover to Indian Government and the collaborators among Sikhs. This whole farce has given an “illusion” that justice will be done. In fact every Sikh must walk away from Hindu courts and commissions and openly declare that there is no justice for Sikhs in this country and Sikh freedom is the only answer. I think Sardar Phoolka should explain what has been achieved by Sikhs in participating in the stunt called Hindu commissions and Hindu courts?

It is proved from time to time that most of Sikh sympathizers got sold out to Hindu Fundamentalist Ideologist Group who is keen to finish Sikhism in India. I am surprised that Kuldeep Nayar chooses to join them too. If a person decides to switch side, does not mean that we keep supporting him based upon his past. Sikh stand up on issues, not against personalities and the issue here again is that somebody’s face value is being used to undermine Sikh values. I consider that the write up of Kuldeep Nayar is not against Shaheeds or those personalities but on Sikh Ideology.
I would like to ask Mr. Kuldeep Nayar:
Does he agree that Sikhs contributed the most in Freedom for India?
Does he agree that Indian leaders in Delhi/Centre cheated with Sikhs since 1932 by false promises from time to time about Punjab sovereignty?
Does he agree that Sikhs could have their own 3rd country at the time of division or could have chosen to go with Pakistan?
Does he agree that in spite of promises from Mr. Gandhi that there will be no constitution made until unless Sikhs are satisfied/agree with it; still they tried to merge Sikh along with Hindus mischievously? No Sikh leaders signed the final copy of constitution in protest to section 25?
Sikhs have different Guru/Religion, religious rituals, religious places, language, culture and still how come they are being forced to be part of Hindus?
English leaders already had Anand Marriage Act for Sikhs in 1909 ready to be passed but Free India leaders decided to dump it.
Punjab got divided in half in 1947, again in 3 parts in 1965 but again Punjabi speaking areas were kept out of new boundaries of Punjab, why?
Throughout India or International level, Riparian law applies for Water issues, why it is not applied in case of Punjab? Why free of cost water is still going to other states whereas water level is going down in Punjab and there is shortage of clean water in Punjab itself?
Why there is 24 hour electricity in Gujarat but 10-12 hour cuts in Punjab in spite of Punjab generate so much Electricity? Why it is being taken away forcibly for Delhi?
Why Chandigarh is still a Union Territory in spite of agreement that it is to be transferred to Punjab?
How come there is so much drug trafficking in Punjab?
Who is helping and supporting establishments of deras throughout Punjab?
How come there is no new Industry coming to Punjab as compared to other states?
I would like to strongly ask Mr. Nayar what he has to say about Mr. Gandhi’s promises to Sikhs about free area for Sikhs in India and non-implementation of most recent promise on paper known as Rajiv-Longowal agreement?
If any leader wants to resolve Punjab issues, first they have to look at Sikhs and Sikh Ideology respectfully; respect Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s independent kingdom/Khalsa Raj, then only one could resolve Punjab Issue. It could be suppressed for now, but the issue is not dead.
Oh, BTW, you forgot to mention that Army attack was not done at Akal Takhat only but simultaneously 47 other Gurudwaras as well. There was neither a Bhindranwala Sant nor any militants in those Gurdwaras.
You also forgot to mention that Centre Govt. played chankya Niti with Sikhs and got them stuck in Chakarveahu of June 1984 (you very well know that is was planned since year ago and army was being trained on Model/replica of Darbar Sahib complex). No Army at this high level has been ever used by any country on its own people.
You also forgot to mention that in the beginning of Terrorism, there were only 300 militants but more than 150,000 youths got tortured inhumanely and then got killed in false encounters.
You also forgot to mention a book “Open Secret” written by Ex-officer of RAW explaining their role in Punjab Issue.
Incase of Balwant Singh Rajoana also, you forgot to mention that his own dad got killed and militants were blamed for it but when he found out that those were cats (Punjab police in the dress of militants) and the directions were coming from CM’s office itself, he decided to take revenge.
You also forgot to mention that Punjab is going through this turmoil since 1947 just because of ill treatment by centre govt. It was never a Sikh-Hindu issue but Indira Gandhi cleverly converted it into Sikh-Hindu issue to gain votes.
Mr. Nayar, you are right in saying that it could disturb peace in Punjab but you are pointing at wrong reasons. Reasons are clear from above items and non-seriousness of centre to resolve these issues. Instead, now you are suggesting centre govt. to interfere in Sikh’s organizations such as SGPC (parliament of Sikhs). Actually it already has been done by raising Sehjadhari Sikh issue.
Now rest of India will tell sikhs that how they should deal with their internal matters, who sikh is and how sikh should behave, what to wear, what to eat, what to do with their life….. Is it not Gulami then what is it?
We were promised and shown glimpses of Freedom in India by Mr. Gandhi, we have not seen it till today…………….
Mr. Nayar, your intentions are not true towards Sikh cause. You are trying to please your new Masters.
Mr. Phoolka, don’t fool yourself. Wrong is wrong and have courage to condemn it openly.
